Optimal FIA/RILA Portfolio Positioning: Fixed Income Applications
A justified FIA and RILA criticism is when the insurance industry positions the “index” tracking as though equity-market exposure is achieved. Select{e}Annuity, in evaluating features with risk and performance analysis together, proves the faultiness of this claim.
However, positioning FIAs and RILAs as fixed income replacements is true and compelling. Roger Ibbotson’s white paper presents this analysis as a foundation, particularly with rising rates in coming years leading to sub-par fixed income total returns.
Select{e}Annuity provides this type of analysis with accuracy and clarity in top-end tables and graphs. You’ll see how FIAs/RILAs offer substantially better risk-adjusted returns compared to short-term bonds, intermediate corporate bonds, high-yield bonds, convertible securities, and, even, hedge funds.
On top of this, FIAs’/RILAs’ tax-advantaged returns and highly rated income guarantees bolster their portfolio usage even more.
The investment results are strong. The compliance story is clean. The benefit package is unparalleled.
Enforcement is at Hand.
Achieving new insights that build a strong investment case for deferred annuities fully aligns with the demands and intensified scrutiny flowing through the SEC’s and FINRA’s examination and compliance objectives.
Updated Investor Bulletin: Indexed Annuities
July 31, 2020. Indexed annuities are complex products. Before you decide to buy an indexed annuity, read the contract and, if the annuity is a security, read the prospectus. You should understand how each feature works, and what impact it and the other features may have on the annuity’s potential return. You can lose money buying an indexed annuity. Ask your insurance agent, broker or other financial professional questions to understand how the annuity works.

Reg BI Care Obligation Compliance: What is Required?
Under the Care Obligation, you must exercise reasonable diligence, care, and skill when making a recommendation to a retail customer.
What would constitute reasonable diligence, care, and skill will vary depending on, among other things, the complexity of and risks associated with the recommended security or investment strategy and the broker-dealer’s familiarity with the recommended security or investment strategy.
While every inquiry will be specific to the particular broker-dealer and the recommended security or investment strategy, you generally should consider important factors such as the security’s or investment strategy’s, investment objectives, characteristics (including any special or unusual features), liquidity, volatility, likely performance in a variety of market and economic conditions the expected return of the security or investment strategy.
You should consider reasonably available alternatives, if any, offered by your broker-dealer in determining whether you have a reasonable basis for making the recommendation. This exercise would require you to conduct a review of such reasonably available alternatives that is reasonable under the circumstances.

Investor Alert – Equity-Indexed Annuities:
A Complex Choice
Sales of equity-indexed annuities (EIAs)—also known as “fixed-indexed insurance products” and “indexed annuities”—have grown considerably in recent years. Although one insurance company at one time included the word “simple” in the name of its product, EIAs are anything but easy to understand. One of the most confusing features of an EIA is the method used to calculate the gain in the index to which the annuity is linked. To make matters worse, there is not one, but several different indexing methods. Because of the variety and complexity of the methods used to credit interest, investors will find it difficult to compare one EIA to another. Before you buy an EIA, you should understand the various features of this investment and be prepared to ask your insurance agent, broker, financial planner or other financial professional lots of questions about whether an EIA is right for you.

Compliance
Compliance officers and field principals face two tough tasks with the Reg BI hammer raised and ready to pound: 1) Produce a workout plan for investments made into FIA/RILA products that do not measure to Reg BI’s Care Obligation standard and 2) ensuring that the FIA/RILA shelf has differentiated value and a clear path for justified allocations.
New investments require a comparison of alternatives and reasoning for making a choice among alternatives. Select{e}Annuity provides multi-dimensional support to allow you to see exposures and work with your shelf team and advisor leadership to take corrective action.
Most valuable, Select{e}Annuity gives everyone at your firm a common platform, information, and intelligence. Having this strong foundation enables distribution and compliance to game plan to your firm’s objectives without knowledge gaps that regulators will discover.
Wholesaling
With almost 3,000 competing products, it’s essential that you know where your FIA/RILA product line is competitively strong and weak.
For your product’s strengths, you’ll be able to show shelf managers and advisors the benefits provided.
Where one of your products is weak, you’ll know to steer away. Equally important, you’ll be armed with on-the-ground feedback to work with your firm’s product design team to make the needed competitive adjustments.
Shelf Managers
The job you face in deciphering FIA/RILA features is extremely complex. And you have to deal with insurance company wholesalers with a one-sided sales pitch.
The thousands of choices leave open the question, “Are the FIA/RILA options on our shelf appropriate?”
Effective due diligence means your analysis must be independent of wholesaler access, sales pitches, rules of thumb, and unfounded assumptions.
Select{e}Annuity gives you the most comprehensive view of FIA/RILA features but, most important, how they interact to produce investment performance. In literally seconds, you will gain new insights on your existing shelf and be empowered to consider the wealth of choices previously beyond your scope.
When meeting with wholesalers, you’ll know all about their products in the most objective way. Because you can do side-by-side comparisons, you can identify pricing inefficiencies that degrade investment performance.
Select{e}Annuity seamlessly connects your work with your firm’s compliance department. Now, when your firm faces an SEC or FINRA exam, you will have the at-the-ready capacity to explain your shelf selections, how they benefit clients, and how advisors are equipped to make the best recommendations.
Advisors
FIAs/RILAs are some of the most complex investment products created. And, they are some of the most beneficial products on the market. But how do you know?
First, the terms are often obscure (i.e., what does “spread” really mean?), but it’s the interaction of all features that determine the return and income an FIA/RILA produces. Often this complexity obscures hidden disadvantages compared to other options and equally obscures benefits.
You don’t have time to evaluate every FIA/RILA feature and how they interact. You do know that these features affect performance, and this affects your client’s income.
If you don’t get the recommendation right, your clients face a weakened financial plan, and you and your firm face compliance exposure.
On top of this, your instinct tells you an FIA/RILA is the right product, but how do you explain to your client the features and how they affect performance?
Select{e}Annuity does all the analysis work for you. And, with its wide array of top-end graphs and charts, you have a number of different elements for client education.
Last, Select{e}Annuity enables a highly valuable investment planning capability. You can select specific FIAs/RILAs for what they do best and assemble these selections into an optimized portfolio of annuities that tracks your client’s income and risk needs across investment horizons.
The competitive and regulatory costs for being wrong are huge.
Being right is a competitive growth accelerator.
